James and Scott Shermetaro

Current OU students James and Scott Shermetaro come from a large family of Oakland University graduates. Parents Mark (BS ’83; MBA ’88) and Anne (BS ’85; MA ’90) met at Rochester High School and later attended OU together. Mark asked Anne to marry him just before graduating in April of 1983, and the two married that November at the St. John Fisher Chapel across the street from campus.

Four of the couple’s six children have attended Oakland University: Identical twins Caryn (BIS ’11) and Jessica (BS ’11) both played for Oakland’s tennis team. Oldest son James graduates this spring with a BS in General Management. Youngest son Scott was recently elected into Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society that his father was president of more than 30 years ago!

Mark says, “Anne and I believe that OU is a terrific university with excellent degree programs, excellent professors and staff, and university campus environment. It is a top-rated school right in our backyard, which allowed our kids to live at home or on campus.” He adds, “Our children had choices to attend other schools. OU provided them with a great education, leadership exposure, and participation in sports and organizations, all at a cost that allowed them to graduate debt-free and prepared to move to their next challenge.”

Does your family have an OU connection? We are looking for families with an OU story - this could mean multiple generations who attended OU, or are currently attending OU, or even a non-alumni family member who become involved in OU when their student enrolled.
Email a brief explanation of why your family should be featured to parents@oakland.edu. If your family is chosen, we will contact you for more information and send you a thank you gift!
